Overton, Olsen in Top 10 After Two Stages at Q-School
Nov. 18, 2005
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - After two rounds at the second stage of Q-School, former Indiana men's golf standouts Jeff Overton (2002-05) and Dan Olsen (1986-89) are in position to move through to the final stage, while Steve Wheatcroft (1998-01) is holding steady. Each member of the trio resides in the top 30 at the PGA Tour's National Qualifying Tournament, giving them an opportunity to advance to the final stage.
Overton produced his second straight 1-under-par 71 on Thursday at Bayonet Golf Course in Seaside, Calif. The Evansville, Ind., native is tied for eighth place with the top 19 plus ties after the four rounds of play advancing to the final stage. Steve Schneiter (67-73) and Steven Alker (70-70) hold the lead at the site with 4-under scores of 140.
Like Overton, Olsen sits in a share of eighth place following an even-par 72 for the second day in a row at Oak Valley Golf Club in Beaumont, Calif. A 2004 PGA Tour member, Olsen trails leaders Will MacKenzie (71-70) and Jeremy Anderson (72-69) by three strokes. As is the case at the Seaside site, the top 19 plus ties move on to the final stage.
On the heels of a 3-under 69 in round one, Wheatcroft netted a 72 in round two and is tied for 30th at Lake Jovita Country Club in Dade City, Fla. Bubba Dickerson leads the field with a 13-under total of 131 following rounds of 66 and 65. At Lake Jovita, the top 18 scores plus ties advance to the final stage. Wheatcroft sits two strokes behind eight players in order to move on.
If any or each of the three advance, the final stage of qualifying will take place on Wednesday-Monday, Nov. 30-Dec. 5 at Panther Lake Course and Crooked Cat Course in Winter Garden, Fla.
In addition to the aforementioned trio, former Hoosier Randy Leen (1995-98) participated at the second stage qualifier on Nov. 9-12. Playing Hombre Golf Club in Panama City Beach, Fla., Leen finished in a tie for 29th at 290 (72-77-70-71).
