Hoosiers Drop Exhibition Opener to Xavier, 1-0
Aug. 19, 2014
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana University men's soccer team opened its two-match preseason slate Tuesday night with a 1-0 los to Xavier on Jerry Yeagley Field at Armstrong Stadium.
The Hoosiers had a decided advantage in the shot tally at 13-6, but it was a goal from Alex Ridsdale in the 72nd minute that gave the Musketeers the 1-0 win.
"We did some pretty good things but it was really a tale of two halves tonight," said head coach Todd Yeagley. "I thought we were the aggressors in the first half but stalled a little bit in the final third. The chemistry and pairings of the players is going to take time as we've only been at it for six days."
Indiana started the match strong with an 8-1 shot advantage in the first half, including a rocket from senior Patrick Doody in the sixth minute that bounced off the cross bar and under but did not quite make it past the goal line. Later in the first half it senior midfielder Jamie Vollmer that saw his shot punched up off the cross bar by Xavier goalkeeper Vince Shaw, but again kept out of the net and in the field of play.
The goal was not Indiana's friend on this muggy night as a third attempt bounced off the top of the frame, this one coming by way of a header from sophomore Richard Ballard with under 30 minutes to play.
Sophomore Colin Webb played all 90 minutes in goal for IU, needing to make just one save on the night. Freshman defender Grant Lillard got his first career start as a Hoosier, as did sophomore Derek Creviston and freshman Jay McIntosh. Freshmen Francesco Moore and Swartz also made their first appearances in the Cream and Crimson.
Indiana has one more preseason match on the slate as it travels to Fort Wayne, Indiana on Saturday, August 23 to take on the Washington Huskies. Game time is 6 p.m. ET.
