Hoosiers Can't Hang On, Fall 4-3 at Wisconsin
Oct. 11, 2013
MADISON, Wis. - The Indiana men's soccer team got a pair of goals from freshman Tommy Thompson and a third from sophomore Femi Hollinger-Janzen, but it was not enough in a 4-3 loss at Wisconsin Friday night at the McClimon Soccer Complex in Madison, Wis.
Indiana drops to 4-7-1, 1-2 in Big Ten play on the season. Wisconsin improves to 8-2-1 and 1-1 in conference action.
The teams combined for just one shot in the first 20 minutes of action, a nondescript attempt from Wisconsin that was off target early in the match.
With just under 16 minutes to play Dylan Mares took the ball down to the end line, earning a corner kick for the Hoosiers. His service to the edge of the 18-yard box found Jacob Bushue, whose slip header nearly made it past Casey Beyers before it was cleared out.
The Hoosiers nearly snuck in a goal as time expired in the first half when Mares' free kick into the penalty area bounced around off the feet of several Hoosiers and Badgers. Eventually the ball was cleared but time expired before Indiana could take the ensuing corner kick.
Indiana broke the stalemate with 37:05 to play on Tommy Thompson's fourth goal of the season. The play was set up when Drew Schall, making his first start of the year, earned the corner kick on the endline. Tanner Thompson took the corner kick, and the ball found his brother to the left of goal where he nicked it in for his fourth goal of the season.
Two minutes later it was the same combination as Tanner played a thru ball to Tommy, and the freshman beat goalkeeper Casey Beyers low for the 2-0 lead.
Wisconsin cut the lead in half as Toni Ramadani scored his second of the season in the 66th minute.
Hollinger-Janzen gave Indiana a 3-1 lead in the 68th minute. Tommy Thompson was taken down 35 yards from goal, resulting in a yellow card for David Caban and a free kick for IU. A.J. Corrado took the kick, finding the head of Hollinger-Janzen for the sophomore's fifth goal of the season.
Wisconsin earned a corner kick in the 73rd minute and Tomislav Zadro's service danced around the IU goal until A.J. Cochran slipped it home to make it a one-goal game again.
The Hoosiers had less than 10 minutes to play in regulation but could not hold its lead as a shot from Jacob Brindle found the lower left corner past an out-stretched Michael Soderlund to tie the match at 3-all. It is the third time this season Indiana has held a lead with less than 10 minutes remaining and allowed the opposition to score the game-tying goal.
The Badgers rode their late-match momentum with the game-winning goal from A.J. Cochran in the 86th minute, his second of the match. His ball to the lower left corner skipped past an out-stretched Soderlund.
Indiana returns home to take on the Louisville Cardinals Tuesday, Oct. 15 at 7 p.m. ET. The match will be streamed live on the Big Ten Digital Network.
