BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -
The Indiana men's soccer team will play a five-match spring schedule, highlighted by a meeting with the U-20 Mexican National Team on April 28 in Bloomington.
"We are excited for our upcoming spring matches," said head coach Todd Yeagley. "The ability to evaluate our young and developing talent against excellent opposition is an important step in our progress for next fall. This group is hungry and excited to build upon our championship success from 2012."
Spring competition gets underway on March 23 as the Hoosiers travel to Springfield, Ill. to take on the Saint Louis Billikens at 7 p.m. ET at Glenwood High School Soccer Stadium. The match will again serve as a benefit for Kailey's Krew, a nonprofit organization founded by family and friends in memory of Kailey Wilmarth. Kailey is the sister of former Hoosier soccer player Neil Wilmarth. In September of 2010, Wilmarth, then a seventh grader at Glenwood Middle School, was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. She lost her battle with the disease in May 2011.
In last year's spring match the Hoosiers took a 3-2 win. IU was also victorious over the Billikens in the 2012 season opener, a 2-1 win in St. Louis.
The first of three home matches comes on March 28 as IU plays hosts to NAIA power Lindsey Wilson College at 7:30 p.m. The Blue Raiders were 22-2 in 2012, advancing to the NAIA National Championship semifinal.
The Hoosiers face Xavier on April 5 at 7:30 p.m. as part of the annual coaches symposium in Bloomington. These two teams last met in the second round of the 2012 NCAA Tournament, with IU coming away with a 4-1 victory.
What has become an annual spring meeting between Notre Dame and Indiana in Fort Wayne will take place on April 13 at 5 p.m. at the Fort Wayne Sport Club. For the last three seasons the meeting had taken place at Parkview Field, a minor league ballpark in Ft. Wayne. Last year the Hoosiers were a 5-4 OT winner in the match played on a condensed field. The two teams met twice during the 2012 season, with the Fighting Irish a 1-0 winner during the regular season. The Hoosiers came back with a 2-1 double OT victory in South Bend in the third round of the NCAA Tournament.
The spring season concludes on April 28 with a match against the U-20 Mexican National Team at 2 p.m. in Bloomington. This is the seventh meeting between the squads with Indiana holding a 2-4 record against its Mexican counterparts. The U-20 squad is currently in qualifying for the World Cup and it is expected many of those same players will make the trip to Bloomington in April.
"Our game against the Mexican U 20 National will highlight our spring season as we see how we match up against some of the finest young professionals in the world," Yeagley said. "It's always a great event for our fans to enjoy a festive international match right here at Armstrong Stadium."
Last year Mexico was a 2-1 winner over the Hoosiers, with Joe Tolen scoring the lone goal for IU. In 2010, the Hoosiers posted a 2-0 victory behind goals from Tyler McCarroll and Will Bruin in front of a crowd of 4,125. It marked the first shutout for the Hoosiers in the series.
In 2008, Mexico came away with a 2-0 victory in front of nearly 5,000 fans. In 2007 the U-20 Mexican National Team down the Hoosiers by a 2-0 score in front of a crowd of 6,000 fans. Javier Hernandez (Chicharito), current Mexican National Team star and starter for Manchester United, scored the first goal in that match.
Mexico won the first game in 2005 by the score of 2-1, with Heriberto Beltran scoring the game-winner in the 82nd minute. The Tricolores would go on to win the 2005 FIFA U-17 World Cup that summer.
