Hoosiers Drop Double Dual to Tennessee, Georgia

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Sophomore Eric Ress was a double winner, and Bryan Chovanec and Ante Zoricic joined him on the winners podium, but it was not enough as the No. 12 Indiana men's swimming and diving team dropped dual meet results to No. 10 Tennessee and No. 11 Georgia Saturday afternoon in Knoxville, Tenn.
Tennessee topped the Hoosiers by a 163.5-119.5 score, while Georgia was a 149-134 winner.
In the 1,000 freestyle, Ryan Hinshaw was the runner-up with a time of 9:08.72, a season best. Ryan Downey was sixth (9:24.46) and Brenden Butler seventh (9:28.74). Titus Knight led the way in the 200 freestyle with a second-place finish (1:37.52), a season best for the senior and an NCAA B cut. Jim Barbiere was fourth in 1:39.63, just 6/100ths of a second off his season best.
Ress continued his domination in the backstroke, taking the 100 back in a time of 47.79, an NCAA B cut and nearly two seconds faster than the second-place finisher. James Wells was fourth (49.45) and Doug Spraul sixth (50.71).
Miller was the top IU finisher in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 56.90, good for sixth place. Brenden Butler placed ninth in 59.21. Tyler Shedron posted a fifth-place finish in the 200 butterfly (1:49.39), with Weik seventh (1:51.48) and Jon Hueni eighth (1:51.94).
Chovanec tied Tennessee's Mike Derocco for first in the 50 freestyle with an NCAA provisional time of 20.17. Zoricic was third at 20.26, a season-best and NCAA B mark for the senior. Knight placed ninth in 21.06.
David Piercy led the IU divers on the 1-meter springboard with a third-place score of 355.80. He took second in the 3-meter competition with a score of 390.20.
Zoricic was the third Hoosier winner on the day, taking the 100 freestyle in 44.93, the sixth-fastest time by a Hoosier this year. Knight was third at 45.05, with Chovanec eighth (46.06).
Ress made it a sweep of the backstroke events, winning the 200 back in 1:46.31, which is an NCAA B cut. Spraul was fourth (1:50.33) and Wells seventh (1:50.96).
Miller also led the Hoosiers in the 200 breaststroke with a fifth-place finish (2:04.15), while Sam Trahin was eighth (2:07.01) and Butler ninth (2:07.06). Hinshaw added another second-place finish with a time of 4:28.41 in the 500 freestyle, topping Barbiere who finished third (4:29.92).
Weik was fifth in the 100 butterfly (50.16), followed closely by Hueni in sixth (50.26) and Shedron in seventh (50.55). Ress was a second-place finisher in the 200 individual medley (1:48.56), while Miller took seventh (1:52.98) and Weik ninth (1:53.78).
The day ended with the 400 freestyle relay, as Knight, Barbiere, Chovanec and Zoricic put together a second-place time of 2:59.96, an NCAA B cut and the second-fastest time for the Hoosiers this season.
Indiana is back in action next Friday (Jan. 28) as it travels to Louisville, Ky. for a double dual meet with the Cardinals and Virginia Tech.
