Indiana Closes Competition at Ohio State Winter Invite

COLUMBUS, Ohio - A tally of three NCAA B cuts in the men's 1,650-yard freestyle highlighted the final day of competition for the Indiana men's swim team at the Ohio State Winter Invite at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion in Columbus, Ohio.
The Hoosiers' Alex Kotliarsky won the 1,650 freestyle with a season-best time of 15:25.72, good for an NCAA provisional time. Ryan Downey took second in 15:32.16, also an NCAA B cut. Bart Ginocchio took third in 15:34.52, his season best and NCAA B cut. Rounding out the Hoosier lineup, Bryant Honsa took fourth (15:45.18) and Michael Mohler eighth (16:24.64).
Austin Steel had the top time in the 200 backstroke in the morning prelims (1:47.22) and finished third in the final (1:48.63). Jackson Davidson was fifth in the morning session with a time of 1:56.25.
Honsa was fourth in the 200 freestyle prelims with his top time of the season at 1:40.09. Michael Mohler was 11th in 1:43.86, with Nicholas Schwab 12th (1:48.64). On the women's side, Kristen Mitsch took second in the 200 free prelims, clocking in at 1:55.15.
Mitsch also swam the 50 freestyle, taking sixth in the prelims at 25.35. Daniel Kanorr just missed an NCAA B cut in the men's race with his prelim time of 20.34. Jon Hueni tallied a season-best time of 1:49.96 in the morning session of the 200 butterfly and went on to finish third in the final (1:51.98).
The Hoosiers will now turn their attention to the Big Ten Championships. The IU women will host the event this Wednesday through Sunday at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center. Minnesota will serve as host of the men's meet, Feb. 23-26.
