    Day 3 Prelims Recap: 2014 B1G Men's Swimming and Diving Championships

    400 Individual Medley
    Steve Schmuhl in tonight's championship final after taking third in his heat with a time of 4:43.56, just off an NCAA A cut. Michael Mohler easily won his heat and placed 25th overall with a time of 3:56.70.

    100 Butterfly
    All five IU butterfliers came up with career-best times this morning. Max Irwin led the pack with a 47.67, nabbing the last spot in the championship final. James Wells finished in 47.79, good for 11th and a spot in the consolation final. Joe Powell took second in his heat, breaking 49 seconds for the first time in his career with a mark of 48.45, good for a spot in the C final. Kyle Johnson went a career best 49.19, good for 32nd. Curtis Goss won his heat and placed 39th overall with a career-best time of 49.77.

    200 Freestyle
    Jackson Miller was fifth in his heat with a career best 1:36.34, good for 14th overall and a spot in the B final. Anze Tavcar bettered his personal best by 1/100th of a second, finishing in 1:38.18, 33rd overall. Bradley Stamper set a new career time of 1:39.42 to place 41st in the field. Grayson Smith's time of 1:39.52 put him 44th in the field. Sam Lorentz popped a 1:40.29, a new career best and 50th overall.



    100 Breaststroke
    Cody Miller laid down the third-fastest time in IU history in his prelim swim with a time of 52.23, good for the third-fastest time of the morning and a spot in the championship final. Tanner Kurz and Mike Hurley will swim in the consolation final tonight, with Kurz posting a 53.84 and Hurley and 54.18. Marijn van Zundert was 29th in his first Big Ten meet, with a career best of 55.84. Blaine Nichols also posted a career best (57.40), placing 38th.

    100 Backstroke
    Eric Ress and James Wells, winners of the last three 100 back Big Ten titles, qualified for tonight's championship final as the third and fourth seeds. Ress went 46.06, with Wells right behind in 46.35. Bob Glover was 20th overall in the morning swim with a career best 48.29, good for a spot in tonight's bonus final. Curtis Goss was 30th with a career time of 49.48, while Yianni Thermos went 49.65, also a career best.
