March 14, 2008
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Indiana University completed day one of the NCAA Zone Diving Championships in Columbus, Ohio on Saturday as five divers compete to qualify for the NCAA Championships later this month.
Four Hoosiers advanced to the finals of the 3-meter springboard and were led by a 10th-place finish from freshman Landon Marzullo. Marzullo tallied 606.55 points over two rounds, nearly 80 points behind winner Ryan Jefferson of Ohio State. Senior Taylor Roberts finished 14th (589.95), followed by freshman Kris Hill (15th- 584.05) and senior David Legler (16th- 573.35).
"The guys had an off day," said head coach Dr. Jeff Huber. "Taylor had a bad start in the prelims and then injured himself trying to stay with his diving. He tweaked his knee and hip, so hopefully he can regroup and will be healthy enough to compete tomorrow.
"Landon and Kris just had off days. This was one off day after several good competitions, so we will see what this group is made of."
Junior Will Bohonyi also competed on Saturday but did not make it out of the preliminary round, placing 29th with a score of 241.90.
The IU divers will have another chance to qualify tomorrow, this time in the 1-meter springboard. The championship concludes on Sunday with the platform competition.
