Indiana Battles Texas and Michigan in Double Distance Meet

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - After yesterday's double dual meet at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center, Indiana, Texas and Michigan took to the pool on Saturday for a unique double distance meet.
The individuals competed in events not normally seen on a swimming schedule. Indiana posted 69 top-10 finishes, beginning with a fourth-place finish in the 600 freestyle by Titus Knight (5:33.46). The Hoosiers then placed five swimmers in the top 10 of the 600 individual medley, led by a sixth-place showing from Steven Murry (6:18.44). Right on his heels was Alec Haley in seventh (6:20.70).
Senior Ben Hesen recorded the first of his four victories on the afternoon in the 300-yard backstroke (2:47.45). Hesen also hit the wall first in the 150-yard back (1:16.27), 100-yard back (48.51) and 50-yard back (21.98).
Freshman Macgregor Leo was the top IU finisher in both the 300-yard breaststroke (third-3:14.57) and 150-yard breast (1:32.57). Teammate Heath Tameris was seventh in both events with times of 3:21.64 and 1:33.60.
In a true test of endurance, four Hoosiers had top-10 showings in the 2,000-yard freestyle, led by John Kevin Koehler in third (18:57.14). He was trailed by Steffan Troxel in fourth (19:33.30), Alex Brunfeldt in fifth (19:40.33) and Bart Ginocchio in eighth (20:14.69). Those four also took part in the 400-yard free, as Koehler took third (3:35.39) and Troxel fifth (3:44.01). Ginocchio finished sixth (3:46.26) and Brunfeldt was eighth (3:51.44).
Todd Patrick was a double winner for IU, taking the 300-yard individual medley with a time of 2:51.49 and also picking up a win in the 100-yard IM (50.87).
In addition to the distance events, the teams were able to swim several sprint events. Patrick and Matt Lenton went 3-4 in the 50-yard butterfly, with Patrick clocking a 22.10 and Lenton finishing in 22.41. In the 50-yard breast it was Ronnie Hehn taking third (26.29), followed by Pat Penoyar (26.32).
The Hoosiers are back in action Nov. 15-17 as they play host to the Hoosierland Open at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatics Center in Bloomington.
