The Indiana men's swimming and diving team took eight of nine events on day one of a double dual meet with Penn State and Virginia in State College, Pa. The teams are back in the water on Saturday at 11 a.m. ET.
Indiana opened the evening with a victory in the 200 free relay as Daniel Kanorr, James Wells, Jim Barbiere and Matt Gerth combined for a time of 1:22.76. In fifth place was the quartet of John Schnittker, Andrew Taylor, Nicholas Schwab and Mike Hurley.
It was 1-2-4th-place finishes for IU in the 200 individual medley, with Cody Miller posting a winning time of 1:50.53. Right on his heels was Steve Schmuhl with a time of 1:50.58. Sam Trahin took fourth in 1:51.74.
The Hoosiers took their third win in a row with Ryan Hinshaw winning the 500 freestyle in 4:24.73, an NCAA provisional qualifying time. Andrew Taylor touched the wall in fourth (4:30.28) and Alex Kotliarsky was fifth (4:30.64).
Miller became a double winner on the day with a time of 55.40 in the 100 breaststroke, an NCAA B cut. Hurley was seventh in 58.40, and Ian Boggs ninth (58.53).
Schmuhl earned his second career victory in the 200 backstroke with his time of 1:47.45. Barbiere took second in 1:48.43, while Wells was fifth (1:50.17). Gerth's time of 46.71 in the 100 freestyle was good for fifth place, with Kotliarsky seventh (46.75) and Schnittker eighth (46.82).
Indiana was back on the winner's podium with the 200 butterfly as Tyler Shedron
went 1:49.16. Trahin was fourth (1:51.56) and Joe Powell
Zac Nees won his first three-meter springboard event of the season, tallying 403.60 points, a new personal best. Danton Rogers was third with 345 points, and Darian Schmidt fifth (298.20).
The Hoosiers ended the night the way they started, with a victory in the 400 medley relay. Wells, Miller, Schmuhl and Kanorr went 3:16.99, which is an NCAA provisional qualifying time.
