    Strong Showing on Day 1 of Short Course Nationals

    COLUMBUS, Ohio - With six top-10 finishes on the day, the Indiana men's and women's swimming and diving team completed the first day of competition at the USA Swimming Short Course Nationals in Columbus, Ohio.

    In the opening event Margaux Farrell, Brittany Strumbel, Stephanie Armstrong and Sara Delay took fifth in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:32.27. In prelims the quartet posted a season best and NCAA B cut of 1:32.18. Farrell posted a B cut in the 50 free with her lead-off leg of 22.96.

    In the men's competition, Bryan Chovanec, Titus Knight, Eric Ress and Jim Barbiere took fifth in a season-best time of 1:20.73. That is an NCAA provisional time for IU.

    Nikki White was the third-fastest qualifier with a season best and NCAA B time of 4:41.67 in the 500 free and went on to finish fifth (4:43.16). Brittany Strumbel was eighth (4:44.94), posting her season best of 4:43.61 in the prelims (NCAA B cut). Farrell was second in the consolation final (4:44.87-NCAA B cut) and 12th overall, while Lindsay Vrooman was 24th (4:48.35-NCAA B cut) and Courey Schaefer 27th (4:51.40-NCAA B cut).

    Ryan Hinshaw was the top Hoosier male in the 500 free, placing 10th in 4:27.49. His time of 4:24.03 in the prelims is a season best for IU and an NCAA provisional time. Illya Larin took 15th overall (4:25.21-NCAA B cut), with Knight 21st (4;24.76-NCAA B cut), Andrew Taylor 25th (4:27.25-NCAA B cut) and Tyler Shedron 30th (4:32.41). Shedron had a B time of 4:27.99 in prelims, as did Barbiere (4:28.08).



    Allysa Vavra competed in the championship final of the 200 individual medley, taking 10th in 2:01.15. Vavra went under two minutes for the first time this season in the prelims, posting a provisional time of 1:59.15. Ashley Jones also went under two minutes in the prelims (1:59.36) and took 15th in the final session (2:00.15).

    Ress chopped more than a second off his prelim time in the men's 200 IM and took 12th overall with a NCAA B time of 1:46.50. Chovanec represented Indiana in the consolation final of the 50 freestyle, taking 18th in 20.43. His time of 20.12 in the prelims is the fastest of the season and an NCAA B cut.

    In the day's final event, the 400 medley relay, Taylor Wohrley, Vavra, Brittany Barwegen and Farrell took fourth in 3:40.30. That is the fastest time of the season by more than five seconds and an NCAA B time. Wohrley's backstroke leadoff time of 53.86.

    In the men's race, Ress, Cody Miller, Shedron and Knight took sixth at 3:13.92, which is an NCAA B cut. Ress went 46.87 on the leadoff leg, just missing an NCAA automatic qualifying time in the 100 back.

    The meet continues through Saturday at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion on the Ohio State campus.
