Senior Kate Fesenko won the women's 100-yard backstroke title to lead the Indiana University contingent on day two of the U.S. Short Course Nationals at the Weyerhauser King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way, Wash.
Fesenko became the first Hoosier to post an automatic NCAA qualifying time with a mark of 52.70 to win the women's 100-yard backstroke competition. Teammate Donna Smailis was fifth in 53.65, which is an NCAA B cut. Fesenko's time is the fastest by a collegian to date this season.
Fesenko took fourth in the women's 100-yard butterfly race with a time of 53.19. That is an NCAA B cut and season best for the senior and ranks just outside the all-time top five at IU. She qualified for the championship final with a time of 53.89 in the prelims. Brittany Barwegen earned a spot in the consolation final where she finished 23rd (55.97).
The men's 200-medley relay team of Ante Zoricic, Aaron Opell, Tyler Shedron and Titus Knight finished 12th with a time of 1:33.36, after posting a prelim time of 1:33.18 in the morning.
In the women's race, Fesenko, Barwegen, Donna Smailis and Nikki White also finished 12th, touching the wall in 1:43.78. They were ninth in the prelims with a time of 1:43.62.
Allysa Vavra qualified for the championship final in the 400-yard individual medley where she finished eighth in a time of 4:15.10. Her qualifying time of 4:13.73 is an NCAA B cut and season best for the sophomore.
Opell finished 15th in the 400-yard individual medley men's race, clocking a time of 3:59.26. He posted an NCAA B cut and season best of 3:55.64 in the morning.
Smailis posted an NCAA B time and season best in the 200 freestyle, taking 10th in 1:47.05. White finished 23rd overall with a time of 1:50.61. Smailis went 1:48.53 in the prelims, while White had a time of 1:48.98.
Knight took 13th in the 200 free with a time of 1:37.67, just 2/10ths of a second slower than his morning swim of 1:37.65, which is a season best and NCAA B cut. Zoricic was 63rd in the prelims with a time of 1:42.88.
Indiana All-American and alum Kevin Swander took sixth in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 54.55. Opell was 33rd in the prelims with a time of 56.85.
Shedron represented the IU men in the 100 butterfly race, placing 59th in the prelims with a time of 50.85. Barwegen finished 50th in the women's 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:05.39. It was Zoricic finishing 43rd in the 100 backstroke (51.22).
The day ended with the 800 freestyle relay as Smailis, Fesenko, White and Vavra combined to finish fourth with a time of 7:20.70, and NCAA B cut. On the men's side, Knight, Shedron, Zoricic and Opell took ninth in 6:45.67.
