    Hoosiers Wrap Up Competition at U.S. Nationals

    FEDERAL WAY, Wash. - Led by the second individual gold medal for senior Kate Fesenko, the Indiana men's and women's swimming teams wrapped up competition at the U.S. Short Course Nationals at the Weyerhauser King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way, Wash.

        Fesenko picked up her second NCAA automatic qualifying time of the meet by winning the 200 backstroke in 1:52.54. That is the second-fastest time in school history and the fastest time by a collegian this year. Donna Smailis was 20th in the prelims with a time of 2:01.37, a season best, but opted not to swim in the evening bonus final.

        Smailis did compete in the consolation final of the 100-yard freestyle where she finished 11th with a season best and NCAA B time of 49.65. That is the fifth-fastest time in school history.

        Nikki White competed in the 1,650-yard freestyle where she took 15th in a time of 16:45.26. In the men's 100 freestyle race, Titus Knight was 30th with a time of 45.30, while Ante Zoricic was 36th (45.34- season best).

        Allysa Vavra took 19th in the 200-yard breaststroke with a season best and NCAA B time of 2:15.23. She qualified for the bonus final after posting a time of 2:16.65 in the morning prelims.

        Brittany Barwegen bettered her time in the 200 butterfly by touching the wall in 1:59.80 to finish 19th. That is an NCAA B cut. In the men's 200 butterfly competition, Tyler Shedron placed 13th with a time of 1:49.13. His morning prelim mark of 1:48.81 is a season best and NCAA B cut.

        Indiana closed the meet with the 400 free relay as Fesenko, Smailis, White and Vavra took ninth with a time of 3:24.57. That is an NCAA B cut and season best for the event. On the men's side, Zoricic, Knight, Shedron and Opell placed 10th with a time of 3:03.12.

        Also competing today was women's diving at the Ohio State Invite. Nicole Brehm was the lone IU representative in the 1-meter springboard where she finished 14th with a score of 230.55.
