Hoosier Swimmers Earn Recognition

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - National swimming blog TheSwimmersCircle.com recently handed out its mid-season awards, and several Hoosiers were recognized for their work in the pool so far this season.
In taking a look at the Big Ten Conference, TheSwimmersCircle named senior Margaux Farrell its Women's Swimmer of the Semester. Farrell currently has the top times in the Big Ten in the 100 free, 200 free and 500 free.
The blog also tabbed the Hoosiers as the favorite to win the women's Big Ten title. Indiana is the three-time defending champion and has won four of the last five Big Ten titles. This year's conference meet will take place Feb. 15-18 in Iowa City, Iowa.
Newcomer Justine Ress was named the Women's Freshman of the Semester. She currently leads the Big Ten in the 200 backstroke (1:54.41) and also has top-10 times in the 100 back (54.07) and 100 butterfly (54.76). Sophomore Brenna MacLean was an honorable mention pick in the Prepping for a Big Second Half category.
On the men's side, sophomore Cody Miller was named honorable mention in the category of Men's Swimmer of the Semester. Miller is the defending Big Ten Champion in the 100 breaststroke and 200 breaststroke. Head coach Ray Looze was also honorable mention in the Men's Coach of the Semester category.
The blog has taken notice of Steve Schmuhl's early-season performances, naming him honorable mention in the category of Men's Freshman of the Semester. Schmuhl currently has the top time for the Hoosiers in the 200 freestyle (1:36.50), ranking sixth in the conference. He is also fourth in the Big Ten in the 200 back (1:44.51).
In the Breakout Swimmer of the Semester category, sophomore James Wells was a honorable mention pick. Wells leads the Hoosiers in the 100 backstroke (47.61).
Both Hoosier squads are back in action this Saturday as they travel to conference rival Michigan for a dual meet on Saturday, Jan. 7 at noon ET.
