HOOSIER SWIMMERS START NEW YEAR WITH WIN OVER SOUTH CAROLINA

The 25th-ranked Indiana men's swimming team started 1998 off right with a dual meet victory over South Carolina. Indiana defeated the Gamecocks in a close meet by the score of 104-101. The win was the second of the season for the Hoosiers against a single loss. Winners for IU included Rob Chelle, Tom Davis, Rob Iglinski, and Tom Wanezek.

Indiana took a substantial lead early in the meet by taking the top four places in the 1000 freestyle. South Carolina cut the lead throughout the meet and was within eight points going in the final relay, but Indiana finished second and third to take the three point victory.

Chelle led the way in the 1000 free by posting a winning time of 9:26.78, the best time this season in the 1000 free. He was followed by Chris Gage, Ryan Tabereaux, and Ben Hunter. In the 200 individual medley, Iglinski and Kyle Goodrich finished first and second. Iglinski won with a time of 1:52.71, his best time of the season.

In the 100 freestyle, the Hoosiers also finished first and second with Wanezek winning and Don Gold placing second. Wanezek won in :47.20. The 200 breaststroke also saw two Hoosiers finish ahead with Davis winning and Iglinski finishing second. Davis' winning time of 2:04.23 is the team's fastest this season.

In the relays, the Hoosiers took second and third in the 400 medley and 400 free relays. The second and third in the free relay was just enough for Indiana to get the win. The Hoosiers will be in the pool again at the Counsilman/Billingsly Aquatic Center on January 17. They open the Big Ten season against Northwestern.
