Jan. 10, 2012
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana University junior diver Zac Nees was named the Big Ten Diver of the Week, while swimmer Steve Schmuhl was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week, the conference office announced Tuesday.
Nees was victorious in the 3-meter springboard event in a dual meet at Michigan last Saturday, tallying 384.00 points. That is the second-highest point total by a Hoosier in the event this year, with Nees also holding the top spot at 403.60 (vs. Penn State, Virginia). Nees also finished third in the 1-meter competition with 335.10 points. This is the second Diver of the Week honor for Nees this season.
Schmuhl was honored by the conference for the first time in his career with four top-two finishes against the Wolverines. Schmuhl was on the winning 200 medley relay team that posted a time of 1:29.32, an NCAA B cut. His second victory of the day came in the 200 backstroke when he touched the wall in 1:47.17. Schmuhl also recorded an NCAA provisional time in the 200 butterfly, finishing second in 1:48.07, and was second in the 100 butterfly (49.23).
The Hoosiers return to action on Saturday, Jan. 21 as they play host to their first home meet of the season against the Purdue Boilermakers. Diving events begin at 10 a.m. ET at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center, with swimming events getting underway at 11 a.m. ET. The meet will be shown live on the Big Ten Network at 11:30 a.m. ET.
