    HOOSIERS DROP BIG TEN OPENER

The Indiana swimming and diving team lost to the visiting Penn State Nittany Lions 143-100 on Friday afternoon. The Hoosiers jumped out of the blocks quickly by winning the first two events, but Penn State's depth was too much for Indiana.

In the first event, the 400 medley relay, Tom Wanezek and Don Gold brought the Hoosiers from behind to win in a photo finish. The time of 3:23.31 was the season's fastest. In the 1000 free, Ben Hunter took first with a time 9:30.46, also a season best.

From that point the rest of the meet belonged to Penn State. The Nittany Lions took at least first and second in the next six events to build a substantial lead. A strong performance by Indiana's divers closed the gap but it wasn't enough.

Mike Collier placed first on the one-meter with score of 374.45. He was followed by teammates Jason Graves and Ryan Kosanic in second and third. On the three-meter it was Graves who placed first followed by Collier, Jon Repetti, and Kosanic. Graves posted a score of 347.95. Both diving scores were also season highs.

Tom Davis also set a season best in winning the 200 breast. His winning time was 2:04.14. Ken Ackermann placed second in the 200 back and Heath Montgomery took second in the 500 free.

Indiana will be action again tomorrow when the host the Cincinnati Bearcats. The coed meet will be at the Counsilman/Billingsley Center. Diving starts at 11 a.m., while the swimming starts at 2 p.m.
