HOOSIERS CRUISE TO VICTORY OVER WILDCATS

The Indiana men's swimming and diving team started out quickly and never looked back in a 143-100 dual meet win over Northwestern. This win was IU's first in the Big Ten and improved their overall record to 3-1. Even though the Hoosiers only won four of the swimming events, their consistent finishes in the top three spots got them the easy victory. The diving team dominated the one and three-meter events with Indiana taking the top five spots on the one-meter and the top four on the three-meter.

IU set the tone in the first two races by placing first and third in the 400 medley relay and taking four of the top five spots in the 1000 freestyle. In probably the most exciting event of the day, Don Gold came from behind on the last leg of the 400 medley relay to give the Hoosiers a first-place finish. Gold, along with Ken Ackermann, Tom Davis, and Tom Wanezek won in a time of 3:25.00, the fastest time this year in that event.

In the 1000 freestyle, Ben Hunter won with a time of 9:24.18, surpassing the fastest time this season by a Hoosier. Chris Gage, Rob Chelle, and Ryan Tabereaux finished in spots three through five. After the first two events, Indiana had built a 27-9 lead.

In the 200 butterfly, Rob Iglinski won in a time of 1:51.99, a personal best, and Jeff Ostermann came in second at 1:53.67. In the 500 freestyle, Indiana finished one, two, three to put the meet away. Joe Trent finished first in a time of 4:37.33. He was followed by Chris Gage and Ben Hunter.

In the diving events, the Hoosiers dominated. Mike Collier won the one and three-meter events. In the one-meter event, Collier scored 327.52 followed by Tom Davidson, Jon Repetti, Ryan Kosanic, and Jason Graves. In the three-meter competition, Collier won with a score of 346.72. Davidson finished second followed by Repetti and Graves.

The Hoosiers will look to win their third dual meet in a row when they host Cincinnati in a dual meet on January 24. The meet is a coed meet and will start at 1:00pm at the Counsilman/Billingsley Aquatic Center.
