Jan. 20, 2009
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - After another record-setting performance in the pool, senior Matt Lenton is the Big Ten Swimmer of the Week, the conference office announced Tuesday. He shares the honor with Bobby Savulich of Michigan. In addition, Lenton was named CollegeSwimming.com's Counsilman Hunsaker National Collegiate Swimmer of the Week.
Lenton set two new school records and was victorious in four events as the Hoosiers posted dual meet wins over Ohio State and Missouri at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center. After setting a new school mark in the 50-yard freestyle last weekend, Lenton topped the time with a 19.82 to win the 50 free race. Later in the meet he re-set the record once again with a time of 19.45 on the lead-off leg of the 200-yard freestyle relay. Lenton, Bryan Chovanec, Ante Zoricic and A.J. Miller combined for a new school and pool-record time of 1:18.20 in the event.
Lenton also won the 100 freestyle (44.11) and was part of the winning 200-medley relay team (1:28.18). It is the first Big Ten weekly honor for Lenton.
The Hoosiers are back in action this Saturday as they travel to Evansville, Ind. to take on the Evansville Purple Aces in a dual meet. Action is set to begin at 1 p.m. ET at Wyttenbach Pool.
