Jan. 21, 2014
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Big Ten Conference office announced Tuesday that Indiana senior Darian Schmidt is the Big Ten Diver of the Week, while Anze Tavcar and Gia Dalesandro have earned Freshman of the Week honors.
For the sixth time in his career, Schmidt is the Big Ten Diver of the Week as he posted a first-place finish on the 3-meter and a third-place finish on the 1-meter in a dual meet sweep of Iowa and No. 7 Missouri this past weekend in Iowa City, Iowa. Schmidt's score of 455.75 on the 3-meter was almost 100 points ahead of the second-place finisher, and just five points off his school record of 460.20 set last January. He finished with 335 points on the 1-meter springboard, taking third.
Tavcar posted NCAA B cuts in the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle, sweeping both events. His time of 20.18 in the 50 free is a personal best, while he went 44.21 for the win in the 100 free, just behind his season best and team-leading time of 44.09 set at the USA Swimming Winter Nationals in December. Tavcar also swam leadoff on the 400 free relay team that took first in a time of 2:59.34.
Dalesandro earns her third Freshman of the Week honor after wins in the 200 medley relay and 200 individual medley in the Hoosiers' wins over Iowa, Illinois and Missouri. Dalesandro won the 200 IM in 2:03.80, while teaming with Brooklynn Snodgrass, Bronwyn Pasloski and Kait Flederbach for a winning time of 1:41.22 in the 200 medley relay. Dalesandro also led IU with a second-place finish in the 100 butterfly.
