Schmidt Named Diver of Championships

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana University sophomore Darian Schmidt was named Diver of the Championships thanks to his performance at last week's Big Ten Men's Swimming and Diving Championships in Iowa City, Iowa.
Schmidt shares the award with Ohio State's Shane Miszkiel. The award is given to the diver who accumulates the most points based on finishes at the Big Ten meet.
Schmidt won his first Big Ten title with a school-record score of 459.30 on the 3-meter springboard. In prelims he put up a score of 445.90, which is the second-highest score ever by a Hoosier in the event.
A third-place finish on the 1-meter springboard came thanks to a point tally of 370.10. He also finished second in the consolation final and 10th overall on the platform with a score of 348.50.
Schmidt and the rest of the Hoosier divers will compete at the NCAA Zone C Championships, March 8-10 at the Counsilman Billingsley Aquatic Center in Bloomington. Up for grabs are seven women's and seven men's spots at the NCAA Championships. The women's championship takes place March 15-17 in Auburn, Ala., while the men's championship will be contested March 22-24 in Federal Way, Wash.
