    Hoosiers Advance Three to Consolation Finals

    Prelim Results

    East Meadow, N.Y.- The Indiana men's swimming and diving team advanced one individual and two relays to the consolation finals at the 2004 NCAA Championships. Finals for day one events will start at 7:00 p.m. at the Nassau County Aquatic Center in East Meadow, N.Y.

    Freshman Colin Russell finished 15th during the prelims in the 400-meter freestyle with a time of 3:47.11. Russell entered the event seeded 12th and will swim in the consolation finals tonight. The time converted to short course yards and the 500 freestyle was a 4:19.59, which was a season-best.

    Indiana advanced a pair of relays into the consolations finals this evening. The 200-meter freestyle relay of Russell, senior Claes Andersson, sophomore Kevin Swander and junior Murph Halasz placed 16th during the prelims. The relay's time was 1:29.57.

    The Hoosiers' 400-meter medley relay finished 13th during the prelims to advance to the consolation finals. The relay of senior Matt Leach, Swander, Halasz and Russell went 3:36.54 during the preliminary swim.

    Andersson also competed in the 50-meter freestyle and finished 42nd. His time of 22.58 converted to 20.23 in short course yards.

    The Hoosiers will return to the pool tonight for the day one finals at the 2004 NCAA Championships. The finals are set to begin at 7:00 p.m. with the 200-meter freestyle relay, 400-meter freestyle, the 200-meter individual medley, the 50-meter freestyle, one-meter diving and the 400-meter medley relay.
