BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -
Indiana University head diving coach Jeff Huber announced that Dathan Schmidt (Bloomington, Ind./Bloomington South) will be joining the IU Diving team starting in 2012-13.
"I am extremely excited to have Dathan Schmidt joining the IU diving team next academic year," said Huber. "Besides being an outstanding student and a talented athlete, Dathan is a mature, grounded, polite, and confident young man. I can't really find the words to describe how excited I am to have the opportunity to work with Dathan or how lucky we are to have him be a part of the IU diving tradition."
In the pool, qualified for the state meet three times and placed 16th, fourth and most recently third, as he helped South to a second place finish as a team. He was named the Bloomington Herald Times' Boys Diver of the Year and was named to the HT's All-Area Boy's Swimming and Diving First Team as senior after garnering second team honors the two previous seasons.
Also during his high school career, he teamed with his brother, Darian, and Danton Rogers - both current members of the IU Diving Team, to set national records for combined team score for both six and 11 dives.
Schmidt, a recent graduate of Bloomington South High School, held a perfect 4.0 GPA and was a four-year member of the Honor Roll in addition to receiving the Excellence in Art Award.
