    Zubkova's Silver in Backstroke Highlights Day Two of Mutual of Omaha

    OMAHA, Neb. - Indiana University sophomore Kate Zubkova finished second in the 100-meter backstroke to lead the Indiana contingent on day two of the Mutual of Omaha Swimvitational being held at the Qwest Center in Omaha, Neb.

    After qualifying first for the 100 back final with a time of 59.11, Zubkova came back in the evening session to earn a second-place finish with a mark of 59.32. Also competing in the evening finals was recent IU graduate Pat Penoyar who took sixth in the 200-meter breaststroke in a time of 2:18.24. Fellow IU alum Sergiy Fesenko was third in the 400-meter freestyle, touching the wall in 3:50.28.

    Rising sophomore Amanda Smith continues to impress with a sixth-place finish in the women's 400-meter free (4:16.54). Also competing at the event on Friday were Todd Patrick in the 100-meter freestyle (26th) and 100-meter butterfly (13th); Titus Knight in the 100 free (63rd) and Ben Hesen in the 100 butterfly (30th).

    Indiana also has a large group of swimmers competing at the Charlotte UltraSwim at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center in Charlotte, N.C. Rising junior Presley Bard placed fourth in the 50-meter backstroke (29.83), while teammate Kristin Cihoski was 21st (30.99). Ashley Jones was 30th (31.75), followed by Caitlin Heyman in 37th (31.99). In the men's backstroke it was Frazier Miller taking third (27.11) and Kurt Bassett eighths (27.40), with Doug Spraul 12th (27.80). Also taking part in the 50 back were Aaron Opell (39th) and Matthew O'Brien (39th), both with a time of 29.48.



    Abby Cooper recorded a time of 1;12.92 to finish 12th in the 100-meter breaststroke, while Amilee Smith was 53rd. Former Indiana All-American Kevin Swander took ninth in the men's 100 breast (1:03.75), with Justin Peterfish 14th (1:05.90). They were followed by A.J. Miller (22nd-1:07.15), Macgregor Leo (23rd-1:07.25) and Ronnie Hehn (24th-1:07.41). Alec Haley (46th) and Tyler Lemert (49th) also swam the event.

    Alec Haley, who recently completed his eligibility with the Hoosiers, swam the C final of the 400-meter individual medley and placed 20th with a time of 4:34.16. Bassett posted a time of 4:33.94 in the prelims, while Haley was 25th, Opell 37th and Lemert 71st. Cody Weik placed 24th in the 200-meter freestyle with a time of 1:56.64, while Bassett finished 41st and Mark Wetzel 133rd.

    Allison Kay (25th), Brittany Barwegen (45th), Cihoski (102nd), Heyman (109th), Jones (121st) and Mariana Prutton (129th) swam the 100-meter butterfly, while Spraul (38th), A.J. Miller (46th), Frazier Miller (47th) and Weik (49th) swam it for the men. Kay finished fifth in the prelims of the 400-meter individual medley with a time of 4:56.89 but did not compete in the evening final. Amilee Smith was 42nd in the 400 IM.

    In the 200-meter freestyle it was Bard (28th), Donna Smailis (32nd), Jones (54th), Kay (99th), Cassie Luhrsen (110th), Kelsey Atchison (154th), Cooper (183rd) and Prutton (187th).

    Both meets continue through Sunday as the Hoosier swimmers prepare for the U.S. Olympic Trials, June 29-July 6 at the Qwest Center in Omaha, Neb.
