Three Hoosiers Advance to Finals

St. Peters, Mo.-- Sara Hildebrand, Cassandra Cardinell and Marc Carlton advanced to the finals of the three-meter competition at the U.S. Olympic Diving Trials at the St. Peters Rec-Plex in St. Peters, Missouri.
The afternoon session featured the preliminary and semifinal rounds of the men's three-meter competition. After sitting in 14th place after the prelims, Carlton fought his way back to capture 12th place with 549.54 points during the semifinal round.
Troy Dumais of the Centralized Training Center took first place overall with 678.03 points.
The evening session included the preliminary and semifinal round of the women's three-meter event. Hildebrand was in 5th place during both sessions before finishing with 500.19 points. After sitting in 6th place after the prelims, Cardinell ended the day in 9th place after the semifinal round with 475.86 points. Transfer Lisa Silvestri just missed advancing to the finals with a 15th place finish.
Former Hoosier Kimiko Soldati is in first place going into the finals on Saturday after finishing the day with 557.40 points.
The U.S. Olympic Trials feature 44 men and 39 women competing for 11 possible spots on the Team. The final team size may be less than 11 if one or more divers qualify in multiple events.
Below is a breakdown of how a diver can earn a spot on the 2004 Olympic diving team.
TEAM SELECTION PROCESS:
1. One hundred percent (100%) of their score from the preliminaries. 2. One hundred percent (100%) of their score from the finals.
1. Scores from all three sessions (preliminary, semifinal, final) in each individual event will be carried over and added together for a final, cumulative score. Based on the final scores as determined above, the selection process for individual events will be as follows:
Men's 3-meter Springboard, Men's Platform and Women's Platform
1. The winner of an individual event will be nominated to the U.S. Olympic Team. 2. Second place in an individual event at the Trials will be nominated if he/she is also a nominee for the synchronized event at that height. 3. Second place in an individual event at the Trials will be nominated if the winner of that individual event is a nominee for the synchronized event at that height. 4. The highest placing synchronized nominee in an individual event will be nominated if the second place diver is not nominated per 2 and 3 above.
Women's 3-meter Springboard
1. The winner of an individual event at the Trials will be nominated. 2. Second place in an individual event at the Trials will be nominated.
The U.S. Olympic Diving trials continue tomorrow afternoon at 12:00 p.m. with the men's synchro three-meter prelims. The evening session begins at 7:00 p.m. and will feature the women's synchro platform prelims followed by the men's synchro three-meter finals.
