Divers to Compete in Mock Olympic Trials at IU
June 13, 2014
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - As the halfway point to the 2016 Olympic Games approaches, the Indiana University diving program will host a mock Olympic Trials event on Saturday, June 21 at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center in Bloomington.
The event is free and open to the public and will run from 10 a.m. to noon.
The participant lineup includes 2012 Olympic Bronze Medalist and four-time NCAA Champion Nick McCrory and former Hoosier All-American and Big Ten Champion Darian Schmidt. McCrory recently moved to Bloomington and will train at IU leading up to the 2016 Olympics. Schmidt capped his Indiana career this past spring with Big Ten titles on the 1-meter and 3-meter springboard, and NCAA All-America honors on the 3-meter.
Also taking part in the event is USA Diving National Champion and current Hoosier Jessica Parratto, as well as recent IU graduate and Egyptian Olympic hopeful Emad Abdelatif. A total of 10 divers will compete on the 3-meter and platform.
Making appearances at the event will be five-time Olympic coach and Hoosier great Hobie Billingsley, Hoosier and 1964 Gold Medalist Lesley Bush, Hoosier and 1976 Bronze Medalist Cynthia Potter, as well as 2012 U.S. Olympic head coach and current IU coach Drew Johansen. These diving standouts will serve as judges for the event and will be available to meet with fans for autographs after, along with the diving competitors.
The purpose of the event is to serve as a simulation of a high-pressure meet that the divers will face as they prepare for the Olympic stage. The competition is being held at this time as it serves as the halfway point between the 2012 Olympic Games in London and the 2016 Games in Rio.
It was announced last November that the IU Natatorium, on the campus of IUPUI in Indianapolis, will serve as the site of the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Diving. The event will take place over the course of eight days in June 2016, with final competition dates to be confirmed. Pending U.S. qualification, competition will be conducted for both men and women in individual and synchronized 3-meter springboard and 10-meter platform.
Free parking will be available for spectators in the lot adjacent to the SRSC on the east side of the building.
Schedule of Events - June 21 10 a.m. - Doors open and athlete warm-up begins 11 a.m. - Competition begins 12 p.m. - Competition ends/autograph session for fans
