June 24, 2008
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Fifteen Indiana University men's swimmers will travel to Omaha, Neb., this weekend to take part in the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials, June 29-July 6, at the Qwest Center. The athletes will be vying for a spot on the U.S. squad for the 2008 Olympic Games taking place in Beijing, China.
Leading the contingent is 2008 NCAA Champion Ben Hesen. Hesen, who recently completed his eligibility at Indiana, will compete in the 100 backstroke, 200 backstroke and 100 butterfly at the trials. Hesen picked up his first NCAA title in March with a school-record time of 44.72 in the 100 backstroke. Last summer he finished third in the 100-meter backstroke at the U.S. National Championships, earning a spot on the U.S. National Team. He is currently ranked 42nd in the world with his time of 55.14 at the Mutual of Omaha Swimvitational earlier this month. He finished the 2007 season ranked 11th in the world in the event.
Todd Patrick is entered in four events -- 100 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly. In 2008, Patrick set school records in the 50-yard freestyle, 200-yard butterfly and 200-yard individual medley. He finished second in the 200 IM at the Big Ten Championships and fourth at the NCAA Championships. In 2007, Patrick ranked 17th in the world in the 200 IM.
Current IU student-athletes competing in multiple events at the trials include sophomore Titus Knight (200 freestyle, 400 freestyle), senior A.J.
