INDIANAPOLIS - Junior Steve Schmuhl posted a top-five finish and set a new school record to highlight day three of action for Indiana University swimmer at the 2012 Phillips 66 US Swimming Nationals at the IU Natatorium/IUPUI Sports Complex in Indianapolis.

Schmuhl went 4:16.55 in the 400-meter individual medley championship final, finishing fifth overall and besting his own IU record by more than two seconds (4:18.74). His time of 4:20.36 in prelims ranks third on the IU all-time list, giving the junior the three fastest times in school history.

Senior Cody Miller went 4:24.27 in prelims to earn a spot in the consolation final of the 400 IM but was disqualified along with another competitor when it was determined they did not complete their backstroke-to-breaststroke turn completely on their back.

Miller qualified 16th in the 50-meter breaststroke prelims at 29.00 but elected not to swim the evening consolation final.

In good news for Miller, USA Swimming announced today that he has been added to the roster for the 2013 World University Games in the breaststroke. Miller joins Hoosier Jim Barbiere on the team, which will compete July 10-17 in Kazan, Russia.

Senior James Wells won the 50-meter backstroke consolation final with a time of 25.59, placing him ninth overall. He earned his slot in the consolation final with a time of 25.96 in prelims.

For the women, sophomore Haley Lips placed 32nd in the 100 butterfly, posting a time of 1:02.09.

Competition runs through Saturday, with Friday's schedule featuring Lips and Lindsay Vrooman in the 400-meter freestyle, Miller in the 100-meter breaststroke and Wells in the 100-meter backstroke.
