INDIANAPOLIS - Lindsay Vrooman's top-8 finish in the 400-meter freestyle highlighted day four of action for Indiana University swimmers at the 2012 Phillips 66 US Swimming Nationals at the IU Natatorium/IUPUI Sports Complex in Indianapolis.
Competing in her first championship final at Nationals, Vrooman placed sixth in a time of 4:11.16, the second-fastest time in school history. Vrooman smashed the school record in prelims to earn her spot in the championship final, clocking a 4:10.98 to qualify fifth. That bested the old IU record of 4:12.80 set by Nikki White in 2009.
Sophomore Haley Lips finished 19th in prelims at 4:16.03 but elected not to swim the bonus final.
Senior Cody Miller placed 12th in the 100-meter backstroke consolation final, clocking a time of 1:02.42. Miller went 1:02.49 in prelims to earn his spot in the evening session.
In the men's 100-meter backstroke consolation final, senior James Wells placed second in the race and 10th overall with a time of 55.20. Wells just missed the championship final, finishing ninth in prelims with a time of 55.06.
It was announced yesterday that Wells has been added to the U.S. roster for next month's 2013 World University Games team. Wells will swim the 50-, 100-, and 200-meter backstroke events. He joins fellow Hoosiers Miller (50, 100, 200 breaststroke) and Jim Barbiere (4x200 relay).
Competition concludes Saturday, with Vrooman in the 1,500 freestyle and Miller and Steve Schmuhl in the 200 individual medley.
