    Hoosiers Make Splash on Day One of World Championship Trials

    INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Indiana University swimmers made their presence felt on day one of the 2009 ConocoPhillips USA Swimming National Championships being held at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis.

    Senior Aaron Opell had an outstanding first day of competition, earning spots in the B Finals of the 100 breaststroke and 400 individual medley. Opell placed fifth in the B Final of the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:03.23, and took fourth in the B Final of the 400 IM in a time of 4:22.07. His time in the 400 IM is a new school record, breaking his previous mark of 4:24.69 by more than two seconds. In the morning prelims he was 14th overall in the 100 breast (1:03.12) and 14th in the 400 IM (4:26.27).

    Also returning for the evening session was sophomore Jim Barbiere. Barbiere was 20th in the prelims of the 400-meter freestyle (3:56.18), earning a spot in the C Final. He took second in the evening with a time of 3:54.86.

    Senior Kevin Happ also made it back for the evening swim in the 400 individual medley, placing sixth in the C Final with a time of 4:30.52. He was 23rd overall in the morning session with a time of 4:28.53.

    On the women's side, sophomore Nikki White placed fifth in the C Final of the 400-meter freestyle, touching the wall in 4:16.41. Her time of 4:17.84 in the morning prelims was good for 23rd overall.

    Other competitors with Indiana ties on Tuesday included senior Donna Smailis (100 butterfly- 28th in prelims; 200 individual medley- 38th in prelims), junior Brittany Barwegen (100 butterfly- 43rd in prelims), graduate John Kevin Koehler (400 freestyle- 30th in prelims), junior Titus Knight (400 freestyle- 39th in prelims), junior Ashley Jones (200 individual medley- 37th in prelims), sophomore Alyssa Vavra (200 individual medley- 48th in prelims), junior Tyler Lemert (100 breaststroke- 32nd in prelims), and sophomore Brittany Strumbel (400 freestyle- 31st in prelims).
