    INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - It was another busy day in the pool for swimmers with Indiana ties on day two of the 2009 ConocoPhillips USA Swimming National Championships (World Championship Trials) at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis.

    Recent IU graduate and 2008 NCAA Champion Ben Hesen finished fourth in the 100-meter backstroke with a time of 53.36. Hesen qualified for the evening final after posting the fourth-fastest time in the morning prelims (53.81). His finals time is nearly a full second faster than the school record he set in the event in 2007 at an international event in Chiba, Japan. Junior Doug Spraul was 32nd in the prelims with a time of 57.74, while sophomore Jim Barbiere was 45th (59.31).

        Another 2008 IU graduate, Todd Patrick placed eighth in the 200-meter butterfly, touching the wall in 1:59.20. Patrick posted a time of 1:59.29 in the morning to earn his spot in the championship final. Sophomore Tyler Shedron qualified for the C final after finishing 23rd in the morning (2:03.68) and took second in the evening with a time of 2:01.81. Barbiere also swam the 200 freestyle where he finished fourth in the C Final with a time of 1:50.60. His morning swim of 1:51.37 was 24th. Junior Titus Knight placed 48th in the prelims with a time of 1:52.92.

        In women's competition, sophomore Brittany Strumbel set a new school record in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:03.08 -- 44th fastest of the morning. Senior Donna Smailis (2:05.71) and sophomore Nikki White (2:05.95) also swam the event. Smailis also competed in the 100-meter backstroke where she finished 31st (1:03.71).

        Indiana also has athletes competing a world away at the 2009 World University Games in Belgrade, Serbia. Senior Brittney Feldman placed 11th in the women's three-meter springboard competition with a score of 252.60 in the final round. She was sixth after the prelims (264.90) and eighth in the semifinals (270.60).

        Junior Ante Zoricic, competing for Croatia, won his preliminary heat of the 100-meter freestyle in a time of 50.01. He went on to finish eighth in his semifinal heat (50.57). Also hitting the pool was senior Kate Zubkova, who placed second in her heat of the 100-meter butterfly (59.72) but elected not to swim the semifinals.
