Opell Takes Fifth in 200 Breast on Final Day of USA Swimming Championships

Indiana University senior Aaron Opell posted a fifth-place finish in the men’s 200-meter breaststroke to highlight the final day of competition at the 2009 ConocoPhillips USA Swimming National Championships at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis.
Opell finished in 2:12.09, which is the fourth-fastest time in school history. Opell tied with Nolan Koon for eighth in the prelims as both swam a 2:16.03. That set up a swim-off with Opell blazing to a time of 2:11.23, the second-fastest time in IU history, giving him the final spot in the championship final. Tyler Lemert swam the prelims in a time of 2:24.56.
In the final day of swimming competition at the World University Games in Belgrade, Serbia, sophomore Eric Ress collected a bronze medal on Saturday as part of France’s 400-meter medley relay team. Ress and his teammates touched the wall in 3:38.31 in their medal-winning performance.
