INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Sixteen Indiana student-athletes hit the pool on Tuesday for day one of competition at the ConocoPhillips USA Swimming National Championships at the IUPUI Natatorium in Indianapolis. The event runs through Saturday as participants look to record qualifying times for the 2008 Olympic Trials.

Prelims began at 9 a.m. with the women's 200m butterfly, featuring junior Christie Fuchs (Leawood, Kan./Shawnee Mission East) and freshman Brittany Barwegen (Plano, Texas/Plano Senior). Barwegen placed 21st with a time of 2:14.77, which qualifies her for the Olympic Trials in the event. Fuchs swam 2:20.03, good for 56th place.

Four Hoosiers took part in the women's 200m breaststroke as freshman Amilee Smith (Ellicot City, Md./Howard) swam an Olympic Trials qualifying mark of 2:34.21, placing 21st. Sophomore Sarah Stockwell (Kent, Wash./Kentlake) finished 68th (2:39.44), followed by sophomore Abby Cooper (Cincinnati, Ohio/Ursuline) in 74th (2:40.09) and Jessica Hill (92nd-2:42.43).

Competing against world record holder Brendan Hansen and Olympian Michael Phelps, the Hoosiers qualified six swimmers in the men's 200m breaststroke. Leading the way with an Olympic Trials qualifying time was senior Pat Penoyar (Shelton, Was./Shelton/Washington). Penoyar just missed out on a chance to swim against Phelps in the "B" final with a time of 2:17.16 (17th). Junior A.J. Miller (Middlebury, Ind./Northridge) finished 33rd (2:20.90), while sophomore Aaron Opell (Newburgh, Ind./Castle) touched the wall in 2:21.83 for 41st.
