IRVINE, Calif. - Indiana University senior swimmer Brenna MacLean's record-setting swim in the 200 butterfly and senior Lindsay Vrooman's record-setting 800-meter swim highlighted day one for the Indiana contingent on day one of the U.S. Open in Irvine, Calif.

MacLean took bronze in the 200-meter butterfly final with a time of 2:10.39. That shaves more than three seconds off her old school record of 2:13.37 set less than two weeks ago at the Indiana Senior State meet. Sophomore Haley Lips placed 46th in prelims in 2:20.70.

Vrooman came out in the evening and finished fifth in the 800-meter freestyle with a time of 8:33.77, smashing her own school record by more than four seconds. Her previous best of 8:37.97 was set at the U.S. National Championships this past June.

Junior Steve Schmuhl set a new personal best and recorded the third-fastest time in IU history in the men's 200 butterfly race, taking 10th in 1:59.05.

Junior Cynthia Pammett swam prelims of the 100 freestyle, placing 56th in 57.79. Junior Madelon Webb went 9:17.78 in the 800 free, good for 49th. The quartet of Stephanie Armstrong, Pammett Vrooman and Lips finished ninth in the 400 freestyle relay in 3:49.26.
