    Schmuhl Sets 400 IM Record at U.S. Open

    IRVINE, Calif. - A third-place finish and school record from junior Steve Schmuhl in the 400-meter individual medley paced the Hoosiers Thursday at the U.S. Open in Irvine, Calif.

    The Hoosier women are currently in fourth place with 116 points. The Indiana men sit in sixth place with 63 points.

    Schmuhl picked up his bronze medal in the 400 individual medley with a time of 4:16.07, cutting nearly a second off the previous mark of 4:16.55 set by Schmuhl in June at the U.S. National Championships.

    In the women's race, Dorina Szekeres placed 11th in 4:48.46. Haley Lips (29th-1:01.23) and Brenna MacLean (33rd-1:01.36) competed in the prelims of the 100-meter butterfly.

    The night ended with the 4x200-meter freestyle relay as Lindsay Vrooman, Cynthia Pammett, Lips and MacLean tallied a third-place finish in 8:07.24.
