Hesen Takes Third at USA Swimming National Championships

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Competing with the best in the world, Ben Hesen (Jeffersonville, Ind./Jefferson) placed third in the 100-meter backstroke at the ConocoPhillips USA Swimming National Championships at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis.
Hesen qualified first in the preliminaries, topping Olympic Gold Medalist Michael Phelps. His time of 54.40 in the finals is the ninth-fastest in the world this year. Phelps took first in the final with a time of 53.01, a meet record. T.P. Patrick (Chesterfield, Mo./Marquette) took eighth in the "C" final (57.93).
Making a splash on the women's side was Presley Bard (Napa, Calif./Napa) who placed eighth in the 100-meter backstroke with a time of 1:02.22. It is the second top-10 finish of the meet for Bard as she took ninth in the 200 backstroke on Wednesday.
Ashley Jones (Joliet, Ill./Minooka Community) competed in the "C" final of the event finishing fifth (21st overall) with a time of 1:03.27. Amy Harriman was 90th in the prelims (1:06.30).
Ronnie Hehn (Moorhead, Minn./Moorhead) and Pat Penoyar (Shelton, Wash./Shelton/Washington) advanced to the "C final of the 100 breaststroke, Both recorded Olympic Trials qualifying times with Penoyar taking seventh (23rd overall-1:04.12) and Hehn eighth (24th overall-1:04.30). Also taking part in the preliminary race were Aaron Opell (39th-1:04.98) and Heath Tameris (74th-1:07.05).
Competing in the 200 freestyle, John Koehler (Springfield, Ohio/Central Catholic) placed 61st with a time of 1:54.16. Teammate Titus Knight (Austin, Texas/James Bowie) also swam the race, finishing in 1:56.37.
Leading the IU contingent in the women's 100-meter breaststroke was Amilee Smith (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) with a time of 1:12.87, good for 46th. Abby Cooper (Cincinnati, Ohio/Ursuline Academy) placed 67th (1:13.77) and Sarah Stockwell (Kent, Wash./) was 88th (1:15.01).
