    PALO ALTO, Calif. - The Indiana University swimming program was well represented on day one of the ConocoPhillips USA Swimming National Championships being held at Stanford University's Avery Aquatic Center in Palo Alto, Calif.

    Senior Allysa Vavra posted the top finish of the day among current IU student-athletes with a 12th-place finish in the 200-meter individual medley. Vavra set a new school record with a time of 2:14.81, which is also an Olympic Trials cut. Her time of 2:16.06 in prelims is the third-fastest time in the IU record book. Senior Brittany Strumbel also posted a Trials cut in prelims with a time of 2:17.03 (23rd), while Kim Tracey finished her prelim heat in 2:20.37.

    Junior Ryan Hinshaw took 18th in the 400-meter freestyle, clocking a time of 3:55.50 in the B final, an Olympic Trials cut. Junior Jim Barbiere was 24th in 3:55.92. Also taking part in the men's 400 free, Tyler Shedron was 33rd in 3:58.01, while Andrew Taylor finished 41st (3:58.88). Patrick Scally clocked a time of 4:05.27. Both Shedron's and Taylor's time are Olympic Trials cuts.

    Strumbel led the IU women in the 400-meter freestyle by finishing 18th in 4:13.94. Her prelim time of 4:13.83 is the second-fastest time in school history. Both times qualify her for next year's Olympic Trials in the event. Sophomore Lindsay Vrooman got her Olympic cut with a time of 4:15.09, good for 24th place. Her prelim swim of 4:14.95 is the fourth-fastest time in IU history. Courey Schaefer swam a 4:20.16 in the 400 free prelims, finishing 71st.

    Former Hoosier All-American Kevin Swander was runner-up in the 100-meter breaststroke with a time of 1:00.59. IU sophomore and reigning Big Ten champion Cody Miller was 24th with a time of 1:02.64.

    Junior Sam Trahin finished 27th in the 400-meter individual medley at 4:26.20, after posting a time of 4:25.95 in prelims. Former Hoosier Todd Patrick was 18th in 4:25.84. All the above times are Olympic Trials qualifiers.

    Tracey competed in the 100-meter butterfly, posting a time of 1:03.42 (131st). The day ended with Barbiere, Shedron, Eric Ress and Daniel Kanorr placing 10th in the 400-meter freestyle relay with a time of 3;24.96.

    The meet continues on Wednesday with the men's 200 freestyle, 100 backstroke, 200 butterfly and the women's 100 backstroke, 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle relay.
