Past and present Indiana University swimmers competed in three championship finals on day four of the ConocoPhillips USA Swimming National Championships at the Stanford University Avery Aquatics Center in Palo Alto, Calif.
Recent IU graduate Ashley Jones placed seventh in the 200-meter backstroke with a time of 2:13.10, cementing her spot in the event at next year's Olympic Trials. Senior Allysa Vavra swam the C final finishing 30th overall in 2:18.55 but posted a Trials cut of 2:15.84 in prelims. Incoming freshman Justine Ress was 86th in 2:19.45.
Vavra also swam the C final of the 200-meter butterfly, placing 29th in 2:15.72. She also recorded a time of 2:14.27 in the prelims, with both earning her a spot at next year's Olympic Trials. Sophomore Lindsay Vrooman earned her Trials cut with a time of 2:16.03 (43rd).
Indiana's 800 freestyle relay team of junior Eric Ress, senior Andrew Taylor, junior Jim Barbiere and senior Tyler Shedron finished fifth in a time of 7:28.43. Ress also swam the 100 freestyle earlier in the day, finishing 55th with a Trials cut of 51.05.
Former Hoosier All-American Todd Patrick was seventh in the 200-meter individual medley in 2:01.35. Junior Sam Trahin posted a time of 2:04.28 in prelims, good for 31st and a Trials cut. Sophomore Cody Miller clocked in at 2:07.03.
Competition at Nationals concludes Saturday with the men's 200 backstroke, 200 breaststroke, 1,500 freestyle finals and the 400 medley relay. The women will finish with the 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 800 freestyle and 400 medley relay.
