    Vavra Earns Spot at Pan Am Games as Hoosiers Wrap USA Swim Championships

    PALO ALTO, Calif. - Senior Allysa Vavra has parlayed her outstanding performance at the ConocoPhillips USA Swimming National Championships into a spot on the USA roster for the 2011 Pan Am Games, and the entire Hoosier squad wrapped up competition at the meet at the Stanford University Avery Aquatic Center in Palo Alto, Calif.

    Vavra continued her outstanding meet with a 26th-place finish in the 200-meter breaststroke, topping her own school record with a time of 2:33.31 and earning a spot in the event at the 2012 Olympic Trials. Vavra's performance at the USA National Championships has earned her a spot on the U.S. roster for the 2011 Pan-Am Games, Oct. 14-30 in Guadalajara, Mexico. Sophomore Brittney Phelan finished 57th in 2:36.12.

    Sophomore Cody Miller finished second in the B final of the 200-meter breaststroke and 12th overall with a Trials cut of 2:13.72. Former Hoosier All-American Kevin Swander finished 22nd in the prelims with a time of 2:16.61, while junior Sam Trahin was 53rd with his Trials cut of 2:20.30.

    In the 800-meter freestyle, sophomore Lindsay Vrooman posted the fourth-fastest time in school history with an 8:51.32, finishing 31st. Senior Brittany Strumbel was 55th overall in the 100 freestyle with an Olympic Trials qualifying time of 57.02. That is the fifth-fastest mark in the school record book.

    The 2009 NCAA Champion in the 100 backstroke, former Hoosier All-American Ben Hesen finished 25th in the 200 backstroke with a Trials-qualifying time of 2:03.54. Junior Jim Barbiere was 69th in 2:06.98.

    Junior Ryan Hinshaw placed 13th in the 1,500-meter freestyle with a Trials cut of 15:32.43. That is also the third-fastest time in school history. Senior Cody Weik placed 23rd in 15:43.05, while senior John Schnittker was 48th in 15:54.27, and sophomore Patrick Scally was 70th (16:05.84).

    The meet concluded with the 400 medley relay, The Indiana men finished 13th with junior Eric Ress, Trahin, senior Tyler Shedron and junior Jim Barbiere finishing in 3:46.24.

    In the women's race, Vavra, junior Ashley Specht, senior Kim Tracy and Strumbel placed 14th in 4:14.11.

    In addition to Vavra representing Team USA at the 2011 Pan Am Games, sophomore Brenna MacLean has earned a spot on Team Canada for the event.
