    IU Strong on Day 2 of Swimming Nationals

    IRVINE, Calif. - Another Indiana University school record fell by the wayside and the Hoosiers finished with five top-16 finishes on day two of the USA Swimming Phillips 66 National Championships in Irvine, California.

    Lindsay Vrooman posted her second top-16 finish in as many events, taking 13th in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:00.38. She was the final qualifier for the B final after her prelim time of 2:00.37. Junior Haley Lips finished 22nd in the morning swim with a time of 2:01.25

    Junior Steve Schmuhl made his way into the B final of the men's 200 free, finishing 15th overall with a time of 1:49.76. He broke the IU long course meters record in prelims with a time of 1:49.52.

    That record did not last though as freshman Blake Pieroni took second in the 18-and-under C final with a time of 1:49.26. He made it back after posting a 1:50.84 in the morning. Senior Mike Hurley finished 37th overall (1:51.25) and sophomore Jackson Miller 55th (1:52.36).

    In his two weeks of swimming in Irvine, Pieroni has set Indiana state 17-18 age group records in the 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle and 200 freestyle.

    Recent IU graduate and NCAA All-American Cody Miller placed sixth overall in the 200-meter breaststroke with a time of 2:11.41. He earned his spot in the championship final after posting a 2:11.28 in prelims.

    Freshman Cody Taylor came from behind to win the B final of the 200 breast with a time of 2:12.73, putting him ninth overall in the field. Junior Tanner Kurz touched the wall eighth in the consolation race with a 2:15.19. Hurley was 70th overall in prelims (2:22.03).

     

     

    In the women's 200 back, junior Shelby Carroll was the top Hoosier, finishing 41st (2:17.15), while senior Allie Day was 46th (2:17.58). On the men's side, Schmuhl just missed a second swim with an 18th-place finish in prelims (2:01.59), while James Wells was 25th (2:02.58).

    The 50-meter butterfly saw sophomore Gia Dalesandro tie for 41st (27.80) and sophomore Olivia Barker finish 65th. Max Irwin was 61st for the men (25.43).

    Action continues Friday with the 400 individual medley, 100 butterfly, 50 breaststroke and 50 backstroke.
