    Halasz and Leach Turn in Strong Performances at 2003 Outdoor Nationals

    COLLEGE PARK, MD - A number of current and former Indiana University men's and women's swimmers are presently competing at the 2003 ConocoPhillips Summer National Championships and have certainly made a splash on the national scene. The competition began Tuesday and concludes Saturday. During Friday morning's preliminaries, former IU standout Susan Woessner finished first out of 93 swimmers in the 100-meter backstroke in a time of 1:02.64, while junior-to-be Tammy Kostner (West Lafayette, Ind./West Lafayette) qualified 24th for the 'C' consolation finals (1:04.75). The finals in that event will be contested this evening. Woessner also finished 19th in the 'B' consolation finals of the 100-meter freestyle (57.31) and was 51st out of 87 swimmers in the 200-meter backstroke (2:21.49).

    On the men's side, junior-to-be Murph Halasz (Richmond, Va./Mills E. Godwin) earned a spot in the 'B' consolation finals in the 200-meter butterfly to finish 14th overall in a time of 2:02.67. He had recorded a time of 2:01.74 in the preliminaries. Senior-to-be Matt Leach (Beaverton, Ore./Westview) was 15th in the 'B' consolation finals in a time of 2:05.84. He swam a 2:04.78 in the preliminaries. Leach finished 28th in the 100-meter backstroke (58.26).

    In addition to Woessner, senior-to-be Brooke Taflinger (Kokomo, Ind./Kokomo) finished an impressive fourth in the finals of the 400-meter individual medley. Her time of 4:49.95 in the finals bested her time of 4:50.50 that she recorded during the preliminaries. In addition to Taflinger, senior-to-be Erin Gorlesky (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Snider) finished 16th with a time of 4:56.00. Taflinger finished 23rd in the 200-meter breaststroke (2:36.84).

    Senior-to-be Sara Fiden (Kettering, Ohio/Fairmont) finished 18th out of 73 swimmers in the timed finals of the 800-meter freestyle with a time of 8:48.15, which was more than six second faster than her seed time. She was 57th in the 200-meter freestyle (2:05.79).

    Gorlesky finished 21st out of 94 swimmers in the 200-meter freestyle (2:03.40), sophomore-to-be Lauren Lubus (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx Hall) finished 27th out of 92 in the 200-meter butterfly (2:16.39) and 55th in the 400-meter individual medley (5:03.99), and senior-to-be Meghan Medendorp (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) finished 36th (out of 96) in the 100-meter freestyle (57.95).
