    White Sets School Record, Swander Wins 100 Breast at U.S. Open

    FEDERAL WAY, Wash. - Indiana University sophomore Nikki White recorded her third school record in as many tries, and IU graduate Kevin Swander took home gold in the 100 breaststroke on day four of the 2009 U.S. Open being contested at the Weyerhauser King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way, Wash.

        White chopped two seconds off the school record in the 200-meter freestyle with a time of 2:01.25 in the morning preliminaries. She went on to finish eighth in the championship final with a time of 2:01.93. Also coming in under the previous school record in the event was sophomore Brittany Strumbel. Strumbel posted a time of 2:02.22 in the prelims and finished 16th overall with a time of 2:02.27. Sophomore Courey Schaefer was 51st (2:04.71) while incoming freshman Taylor Wohrley was 73rd (2:09.01).

        White has also set school records in the 400 free and 800 free at the meet.

        IU All-American and 2006 graduate Kevin Swander won the men's 100-meter breaststroke with a U.S. Open meet record time of 59.40. Senior Aaron Opell was the top finisher in the B final and ninth overall with a time of 1:01.59, which is the third fastest time in school history.

        In the men's 200-meter freestyle, junior Titus Knight was third in the morning swim with a time of 1:49.99 and came back to finish sixth in the championship final (1:50.34). Sophomore Jimmy Barbiere was 10th overall after touching the wall in 1:50.81 in the B final. Incoming freshman Bryant Honsa was 33rd (1:52.85).

        Not swimming in one of her usual events, junior Brittany Barwegen clocked a time of 1:13.74 in the 100-meter breaststroke, and Wohrley placed 13th in the 100-meter backstroke with a time of 1:02.64.

        NCAA Champion and IU All-American Ben Hesen placed ninth in the men's 100-meter backstroke (55.69), while Barbiere was 63rd (59.43) and senior Kevin Happ 69th (59.79). Incoming freshman Zack Stockman recorded a time of 1:00.30, good for 74th.
