    Three School Records Fall on Final Day of U.S. Open

    FEDERAL WAY, Wash. - Three more Indiana University school records went by the wayside on the final day of the 2009 U.S. Open being contested at the Weyerhauser King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way, Wash.

    Sophomore Nikki White posted her fourth record in four events, cutting nine seconds off the school record in the 1,500-meter freestyle with a time of 16:40.94, placing fourth. The previous record of 16:49.40 was set by Megan Ryther in 2001. White finished her meet with school records in the 200 free, 400 free and 800 free, as well as the 1,500 free.

        Sophomore Alyssa Vavra recorded the first IU record of her career with a time of 2:15.92 in the 200-meter individual medley, good for 11th overall. She also posted a mark of 2:17.23 in the morning prelims. Junior Ashley Jones held the previous record of 2:19.06 set just a few weeks ago at the World Championships trials in Indianapolis.

        Sophomore Ryan Hinshaw also picked up his first-ever school record with a time of 8:05.82 in the men's 800-meter freestyle. The former record of 8:06.78 was set by Sergiy Fesenko in 2005. Incoming freshman Bryant Honsa also swam the event, placing 21st with a time of 8:23.36.

        In the 200-meter individual medley, senior Aaron Opell placed 13th overall and fifth in the B final with a time of 2:03.23. His time of 2:02.66 in the prelims is the fifth fastest in school history. Senior Kevin Happ posted a time of 2:07.55 in the prelims (52nd).

        The meet wrapped up with the men's 4x100-meter freestyle relay, as sophomore Jimmy Barbiere, Opell, sophomore Tyler Shedron and junior Titus Knight combined for a sixth-place finish with a time of 3:46.84. Overall the Indiana team placed fifth at the meet with a total of 171 points.
