Fesenko Fifth in 400 Freestyle at World University Games

BANGKOK, Thailand - Former Indiana swimming standout Sergiy Fesenko (Kiev, Ukraine) posted his second top-five finish in as many events, placing fifth in the 400-meter freestyle at the 2007 World University Games in Bangkok, Thailand.
Earlier in the meet he took home the bronze medal in the 800-meter freestyle.
Representing his native Ukraine, Fesenko touched the wall in 3:49.43, just .24 hundredths of a second out of medal range. Dragos Coman won the gold with a World University Games record time of 3:48.29. He was followed by the USA's Michael Klueh (3:49.10) and Yury Prilukov of Russia (3:49.19).
Fesenko will wrap up his World University Games competition on Tuesday in the1,500-meter freestyle. In addition, beginning tomorrow, Indiana head diving coach Dr. Jeff Huber will lead the USA contingent as the diving portion of the games gets underway. Competitors at the event include senior Christina Loukas (Riverwoods, Ill./Deerfield), who is coming off her first-ever national title in the 1-meter springboard at the Kaiser Permanente Nationals earlier this month.
The 2007 World University Games run Aug. 8-18 with athletes from more than 200 countries competing. The event is held every two years during the winter and summer.
