Head coach Ray Looze previews the 2012-13 men's swimming season. The Hoosiers return seven All-Americans and are coming off a third-place finish at the Big Ten Championships and a 10th-place finish at the NCAA Championships in 2012.
After a year off to prepare for the French Olympic Trials, Eric Ress returns to the pool for IU and looks to build upon his 2011 season where he finished as runner-up in the 100 backstroke and 200 backstroke at the NCAA Championships. A four-time Big Ten Champion in the 100 breaststroke and 200 breaststroke, junior Cody Miller looks to improve his seventh-place finish the 100 breaststroke, 10th-place finish in the 200 IM and ninth-place finish in the 200 breaststroke at the 2012 NCAA Championships.
Senior Sam Trahin was a surprise finisher for IU at the NCAA Championships last season, taking fourth in the 400 individual medley with a school-record time of 3:44.37. Junior James Wells is the defending Big Ten Champion in the 100 backstroke, while senior freestyler Jim Barbiere had a solid summer, earning a spot on the 2013 World University Games team.
Sophomore Steve Schmuhl earned All-America honors in the 400 medley relay, 200 medley relay and 200 butterfly last season and was recently named to the USA Swimming 2012 World Short Course Championships team in the 400 IM.
