Bloomington, Ind.- Junior diver Alex Burns was selected Big Ten Diver of the Week for his performance against the Michigan State Spartans. The Elletsville, Ind. native set a career best mark for in winning the one-meter competition.
Great for him, he deserves it, he has come a long way, Indiana head diving coach Dr. Jeff Huber said. He was most improved diver last year and to win this is quite an accomplishment. Alex has trained hard. I think he is starting to see how much talent he has and what level he can dive up to. In the past, I would say he didnt understand that and held himself back a little bit. That was a real break through meet for him. I can see it this week to he is diving pretty well. That is a great award, I am glad to hear he got it.
Burns is the first Hoosier diver since junior Marc Carlton won the award during the week of January 8 last season. Carlton won two Big Ten Diver of the Week awards last season.
On the one-meter against Michigan State, Burns shattered his career best mark by nearly 50 points in posting a score of 321.23. The score was also a NCAA Zone qualifying mark.
