Lexington, Ky. - The Indiana swimming and diving team opened the dual meet season with a 163-137 victory over the Kentucky Wildcats on Saturday. Indiana used strong performances from a number of athletes as seven Hoosiers won 10 events.
Ken Ackermann, Mike Collier, and Tom Davis each had a pair of firsts for Indiana. Ackermann was victorious in the 100 and 200 back and Davis swept the 100 and 200 breaststroke events. Collier continued right where he left off last season as he placed first on the one and three meter springboard events.
Other winners for Indiana included Ben Hunter in the 1000 free, Jeff Ostermann in the 200 fly, Jason Carlberg in the 100 fly, and Joe Trent in the 400 IM.
Hunter and Trent combined to take the top two spots in the 1000 free. Carlberg and Tom Wanezek finished first and second to put the Hoosiers up for good in the 100 fly.
Swimming coach Kris Kirchner commented, "It was a battle back and forth. We sealed it in the last two events. It was a good team performance and we're looking to get better next week."
Next weekend the Hoosiers will be in action at the Illinois Dual Meet
Extravaganza. The two day event will be Saturday and Sunday.
