Indiana Diving Preparing for Big Meets
November 9, 2001
Bloomington, Ind.-- The Indiana men's diving team is practicing twice a day in preparation for what Head Coach Dr. Jeff Huber calls "the big meets."
"Sure we prepare for the dual meets like any other squad," said Huber. "But the fact is that we are getting ready for the long term. The Big Ten and NCAA championships are our long term goals and those are our focus."
Sophomore Marc Carlton, named Big Ten Diver of the Week on Tuesday, is spending a good amount of time concentrating on the springboard in preparation for the tower.
"We have been working on lead-ups since practice began," said Huber. "His (Carlton's) lead-ups are looking solid and he is diving as well as I have seen him."
Sophomore Alex Burns, who is coming off a wrist injury, has been steadily improving since getting back into training.
"Alex has great potential on all boards," said Huber. "As he gets healthier he will continue to improve as a diver."
Junior Adam Hazes has given Huber 100 percent and the coach recognizes it.
"Adam is training hard and it shows," said Huber. "His lead-ups are looking solid and he is learning new dives quickly."
Although Hazes is coming off injury as well, Huber is optimistic about the season ahead.
"We train as much as anybody," said Huber. "But our goals do not stop at the dual meets. We want to win a Big Ten and NCAA title."
The Hoosier men get back on the boards next weekend at they play host to Texas A&M, Cincinnati and Evansville beginning on Friday, Nov. 16 at 9 a.m. at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatics Center.
