    Hoosiers' 50 free leads the Way at Invite

    Bloomington, Ind. -The Hoosiers completed Friday's morning prelims qualifying four guys for the 50 freestyle final and two guys for each of the 200 individual medley finals and 500 free finals. Friday's finals will begin at 6:00 pm tonight at the Counsilman Billingsley Aquatic Center. Tonight's session will include the 200 free relay, the finals, consolations, and bonus heats of the 500 free, 200 individual medley and 500 free and the 400 medley relay.

    In the 500 free, sophomore Richard Bryant and freshman Mike Jones both qualified for the finals. Bryant is seeded sixth in the finals after swimming his prelim in 4:41.20. Jones is seeded right behind Bryant at seven after his prelim swim of 4:46.31. Clemson freshman Greg Middleton is seeded first with a time of 4:37.02.

    A trio of sophomores make up the consolation heat for the Hoosiers. Murph Halasz is seeded second in the consolation heat after his morning swim time of 4:51.55. David Doerr and Brian Ellsworth are seeded five and six in the consolation heat. Doerr swam a season best time of 4:52.23 in his preliminary race. Junior Adam Goff, sophomore Temujin Gold, and freshman Hank Baldwin will swim in the bonus heat for the Hoosiers.

    Senior David Schulze and sophomore David Winck made the finals of the 200 individual medley after morning swims that placed them fourth and fifth. Schulze swam a time of 1:54.52 during the morning session, while Winck came in at 1:54.88. Clemson junior Mark Henly is the top seed after the prelims with a time of 1:52.96.

    Bryant, Jones and Halasz all made the consolation heat for the Hoosiers. Jones is seeded third in the consoles with a time of 1:56.46, while Halasz is fifth at 1:58.01. Bryant rounds out the Hoosiers contingent in the 200 IM consolations after a morning swim time of 1:59.14. Junior Matt Leach, sophomore Niles Madison and freshman Hank Baldwin will represent the Hoosiers in the bonus heat of the 200 IM.

    Indiana's strongest showing of the morning session came in the 50 freestyle as IU qualified four guys for finals and four for consolations. Juniors Claes Andersson and Mike Payne are the top two seeds. Andersson went 21.10 in the morning session, while Payne went 21.16. Junior Dale Ramsy and sophomore Nicolas Burgess round out the four Hoosiers in the finals. Ramsy went 21.43 followed by Burgess at 21.45.

    Junior Adam Goff, and sophomores Jonathon Burgess, David Winck, and Val Milkov are the four Hoosiers in the consolation heat. Jonathon Burgess went 21.69 in his morning swim, while Winck and Goff were separated by only 7 hundredths of a second at 21.81 and 21.88 respectively. Milkov went 22.03 to round out the Hoosiers consolation group. Freshman Blake Wallace will swim in the bonus heat for Indiana after going 22.07 during his morning swim.
