Jan. 21, 2008
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - First year Head Coach Randy Bloemendaal has begun the spring season with a 2-0 mark in dual matches after his Hoosiers defeated Cleveland State and Morehead State on Monday. Indiana took on Cleveland state in the morning before a 4 p.m. match with the Eagles later in the day.
The Hoosiers started the Cleveland State match by taking two of three doubles matches to earn the doubles point. Phillip Eilers and Dara McLoughlin seized an 8-2 victory at first doubles while Thomas Richter and Lachlan Ferguson won by the same score over Cleveland State's Robert Fox and Rob West in second doubles contest.
McLoughlin and Gruter at third singles and fifth singles, respectively, were the first two to complete their singles matches, each rolling to 6-0, 6-0 triumphs. Ferguson had little trouble in his match either, posting a 6-2, 6-0 win over Chris Klepatz.
In the second dual match of the day, the Hoosiers kept the momentum coming with a 3-0 showing in doubles action for an early 1-0 lead. Indiana's winning scores in order from first doubles to third doubles were 8-3, 8-4 and 8-2.
Although the IU lineup was shuffled a bit against Morehead State, the final outcome was the same: a 7-0 victory for the Cream and Crimson. McLoughlin and Gruter were the first two to finish off their opponents once again. McLoughlin was a 6-1, 6-1 winner over Bradley Bryan and Gruter downed Lovell Medcalf 6-2, 6-2.
Ferguson put together a nice showing once again in a 6-2, 6-0 victory in the fourth singles match. Eilers, Richter and McCarthy all improved to 2-0 in dual play with a pair of wins on the day.
The Indiana men's tennis team gets back to action on Friday, Jan. 25th with two home matches. First is a 10 a.m. showdown with Eastern Kentucky, followed by a match against the Sycamores of Indiana State at 4 p.m. Live match updates will be available for the Eastern Kentucky match.
